"The unexamined life is not worth living."

I am going to erase some things out of my life. I had so many plans for so many things, but of late I think I have grown wise to the idea that I will not have enough time for many of these things. I am not sure if I have complained about this before, but my life has been completely scheduled. If my life was a restaurant and you came in my maître d’ would tilt his nose into the air and say that I am full.

From one Monday to the next, every week, I am booked. I never used to be this way. I used to have more free time than I deemed necessary. People would call me up out of the blue to invite me for a night out, and I would gladly accept. Now my nights out are planned two, three, sometimes four weeks in advance. I have people consecutively booking me at the same time every week. One of these, my kid brother I look forward to and enjoy immensely. However I loath that he just won’t give me the controller as he sits on my bed and plays Halo wrong.

Whenever I am not stuck at work, I’m being either pushed to the gym or being pulled to play tennis (because my kid sister is getting married and she will not have me at the festivities till I can fit in to that damned kurta she got). Because of this four evenings a week are taken up (the other three being occupied by the Internet and my latest online muse of the week) which means I can’t go to the beach and stare at waves and I can’t get drunk on boys' night out and I can’t go scrounging around for that new really nice, really cheap place to eat.

I have also been travelling, reading and catching up on my sleep. Everything else is taken up by everyone else. So I am going to delete some from my life. Deletion. Simple catharsis. The joys of chopping away at weeds as they strive to enter mainstream essence. But what can I delete?

Friends.
Films.
Reading.
Writing.
Work.
That startup that refuses to budge.
Tennis.
Recent History.
Internet.
Music.
Television.
Useless talents.
Family Drama.
Musical Instrument Learning.

Internet would be a good start, but I don’t actually spend much time on here. I read blogs, read comics, download videos and that’s really it. Occasionally, once in a blue moon, I gorge myself on wikipedia or the entire archives of certain webcomics. This takes up a lot of time but I have an addictive personality. But, it is still the reason I stay up to 3am most days.

The telly is a negligable item; I am too fresh for mainstream programming to a point that I barely watch it and when i do it’s mostly films or the box.

Family Drama can be cut. Easily. When my sister moves to the US, my parents should realise how much easier it is bringing up one kid. Sons! They are the future of everything. Atleast, they ought to be.

I refuse to give up reading and writing things. They are too much fun. Have I told you about Hari Kunzru's Revolutions I am reading? Well, I should.

Work has been cut down, to an extent. I used to work 10 hours a day spread over 6 days a week till about a couple of months ago. But, as of now, I have managed to stave off work to a minimal few hours every day. I still have to stay in office the required 8 hours. If I am able to redirect all the energies to a venture on my own is a different question altogether.

Musical instrument learning has be deleted for now. One day I will learn that precious guitar.

Useless talents? I can name some but I will refreain. Gone.

Music and Movies? I’ll cut down, but never ever will I give them up. No matter what the expense. I love my unpaid escapism.

Delete .

And now I am left an empty shell of someone. Hooray for the brother that won’t give me the controller and won’t play Halo properly.

So... They call you the bard.

**** Adapted up from random blogs ****

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. This is what they'd have me do.

"Look at the list and bold those you have read.
Mark in blue those you intend to read.
Mark in RED the books you LOVE.
Reprint this list in your own blog.
Having seen the movie/cartoon/TV series is not the same as having read the book.
This is my list."

Acting my age, not my shoe size

Why are these the only thoughts going through my head as I sit through what ought to be a busy day at work.

1. Should I work with chemicals and hot liquids so much that i could be like that guy from the once popular video game Thief (who is a thief, gosh, surprise!)

2. Shouldn't I sleep on my arm so it goes numb and then upon awakening, i can pretend that someone else is holding me, as it lies dead across my chest.

3. Yesterday i learnt to balance an egg on its tip. One of those life skills that you need to know.

4. That's one damn ugly mirror I'm looking at. Not been a good week for sleep.

5. Think carefully for something impulsive to do.

6. If Androids someday do decide to dream of Electric Sheep, don't forget to declare SheepCount as a LongInt. (XKCD - I hate you for putting that in my head)

7. How do I clone yesterday and call it tomorrow.

8. On a lazy drive to work, why do the clouds mock the way of a perfect view to a perfect day.

9. I could be a millionaire, if i could only stream my consciousness.

10. Where did i put my keys.

I'd have to be acting between almost 26 instead of in between of a ten and eleven...... that's probably where my mentality and my feet sizes are right now. Well, not right now. I don't know what just happened, but i feel my age. Everyone worries about ageing..... About leaving the teen years behind them, then apparently life started at 21. And the variations of the same that come to pass.

I read this somewhere once.

When your young you don't care what the world thinks of you. Then you grow up and start to worry a bit what it thinks. Finally you realise that in fact, it just doesn't think about you.

It was probably more eloquently written originally, and my bastardisation has watered it down.

Currently Listening to - M.I.A - Paper Planes (should probably explain the entropy above)

Packing things away, Life should go on - Pt i

Narrator: The man with all the pretty words is Bourbon, known throughout the civilized world for his charm and quick wit. A smile is ready on his lips and lady fortune seems to smile back, along with countless other ladies. In the uncivilized, he is only known for the ladies.

Thankfully we all know that’s not true.

Hopefully by now we also all know that he posts ridiculous things on his blog - because it’s the Internet, and it’s not real. Everything sounds worse on the Internet. Times New Roman has always been a terrible way to communicate.

His blog however seems to have a lot of drafts. His blog is quite a drafty place. Here they are.

Here’s what happens when left to my Own Mechanised Devices

The days;

Read all my bookmarked google reader pages
Read all my comics
Watch tv for a bit
Contemplate watching a dvd
Read all my bookmarked google reader pages
Read all my comics
Read the blogs of those comic artists
Surf Wikipedia
Maybe make something to eat
But just maybe (omelette toast sandwich x1, yesterday's roti & subji x1 - if supplies grant it)
Smoke with my mp3 player on
Smoke with my mp3 player off
Do a sniff test
Maybe shower
Go to work

The nights;

Turn the geyser on
Forget that it’s on
Take out my list of things to do
Not be bothered to do anything on the list
Read all my bookmarked google reader pages
Read all my comics
Heat food
Wonder where I spent all my money
Tv surf
Read all my bookmarked google reader pages
Take laptop outside and experiment with music tastes
Smoke the rest (cigarettes 2 and 3 go over the lawn wall)
Try to blog
Maybe
Open notepad and write but get too bored
Watch songs on 9XM. Sometimes just so that I listen to "We are the Beaatle Nuts.... Meaning Paan Supaari"
Contemplate watching one of Roger's dvds
Don’t go to bed until i cant stand to stay awake
Brush teeth
Rinse face
Look in mirror
Read a few pages of a book before becoming bored
Sleep
Dream
Maybe

Weariness Kills

And cripples and hurts and maims. But mainly it kills. It kills a lot of good people.

It’s worse than alcohol really. Alcohol is not too good, I know, but it’s not as bad as being tired. Atleast being drunk lets you be loud and obnoxious and you do things you wouldn’t usually do, but when you’re tired your mind shuts down. Completely. The biggest regrets I can list in my life are things I’ve said or done when I’m tired.

But let me throw light on this weariness. It isn’t the eyes-burning-sluggish-red weary. It’s a whole different weariness altogether. It’s a weariness that takes hold when you’re about to fall asleep, or when you’ve just fallen asleep, and someone disturbs you. You say and do so many things because you are so bone-tired.

You can’t think. Images blur in lust.

Untitled

I have a new bus now. It’s better than the old one, in that it’s ten minutes faster and doesn’t go through those areas that makes me ashamed to be human.

The part I like the most about this new bus route though would be the walk I get when I step off it. My old bus deposited me in the centre of Noida, right beside a little shop that sold my brand and an ATM machine if I was low on change. And a bakery. Man, how I miss the bakeries from the South. That was nice too I guess.

But this new bus deposits me a good five minutes away from my old stop, right next to this quaint little momo shop.

Score.

On this day.

Five years ago I was having problems making the omni-directional vehicle run omni-directionally and swearing that patent applications cost too much. Really.

Four years ago I was sacrificing sleep to tell everyone about the ex-girlfriend. We met up and she returned all my belongings, and then she gave me seven hundred rupees that she owed me. I spent the next weekend drinking myself to death because I couldn’t deal with it.

Three years ago I was wondering if I might actually make it through the mba. All plans to be the suitable boy seemed to be gone with the weed.

Two years ago I was racing down the east coast road. I had candy in my till. A cutie to thrill.

One year ago I was wondering if its normal for your kid sister to gift you a zippo for your birthday. I had to bribe a friend to bring back an i-touch for her.

Six months ago I was buying a camera I couldn't afford.

Today? Hmm.... I just might tell you about it next year.

Homeward bound

In 6 hours, I head back home for a few days. I love going to visit, it’s so relaxing. After living in Hyd and now Delhi, it’s like an escape to another, calmer world.

Some things I look forward to:

warmer nights
coffee served everywhere, and its not the instant type
mega breakfasts (scrambled eggs, dosas, onions, chutneys and crushed up chillies, served with yesterdays chicken and super-thick, warm sweet sambhar)
the wide, quieter streets & overall lack of traffic (okay comparitively)
Briyani - non sweet, mixed uniformly, lots of meat
the warm air, the high humidity and the gusty winds - always occurring together
the smell of the fresh cut grass on the little garden that my mom rears
plush living in my parents’ house
driving cars again
chamiers
crossword puzzles - i only seem to spare time for them on airplanes

Things I love even more now that I have lived in delhi:

safe tap water and ice
even the most unassuming of people speak un-accented English
sane drivers on the roads. the most road rage that gets displayed is a muttered swear
everybody understands tam
murugan idli kadai
the beach
Catching zzzzzs whenever I want

Wishful Thinking

"I do sincerely and solemnly state that henceforth and without further procrastinations or necessitated delays, I will no longer self indulgently and with a due sense of punctiliousness to the aforementioned resolutions, no longer put off doing, what really I could have done 5 minutes ago. Furthermore I will stop showing off by using unnecessary and superfluous words just to show my vocabulary."

1. Be nice to the fat cat. Not the one pictured above, who is a dude, but the other one, who hangs around my house like a lovesick adolescent. The cat who whines all night long. The same one who runs into empty car sheds and yowls neurotically. I will try not to tell her to fuck off. It's going to be hard.

2. Be patient in traffic jams. I grumble and swear, when the traffic stops moving and I realized this year that if I was stuck in a car with me and my patience of a two-year-old, I would throw me out of the car and lock the door. This is going to be hard too, because I enjoy hurling abuse from behind the windscreen (as long as the windows are rolled up) and consider myself quite fluent at it. It would be a waste of talent if I gave it up altogether. I'll still do it if I'm driving alone.

3. When I write down a phone number, I will also write down whose it is. My life is full of numbers on scraps of paper. Whose are they? Haven't a clue. I drive myself crazy

4. Next time I am out shopping, I wont let advertisers treat me as if I were Pavlov's Dog - remember the dog that was trained to salivate automatically every time a bell rang. There is a whole industry out there trying to make me buy stuff on impulse. I hereby pledge to be the true "Decider".

5. Stop interrupting people. I don't enjoy it when people do it to me and when I realize I've done it to someone else, I want to crawl in to a hole in shame. It's awful. So that I promise not to do that any more.

6. I resolve to quit drinking … coffee. Doesn't quite taste the same after beer.

7. I am drawn to the idea of making a product that I can sell. There is no reason for it. I could make perfectly fine living working at this company with awesome people, or try to do freelance work on contract. I am finding, though, that being a creator of things people can actually hold is enormously pleasing. It's feels like something primal, but it's possible that this is merely curiosity.

8. Make a "you-comment-i-reply" policy. From now on, I'll try to reply each and every comment given for my post. I got this idea when I ended up going back to the post I've commented to see whether it has been replied back or not. That means that "me" or in other words 'a reader' loved to be replied.Blogger has made this task easier by allowing my comments to be emailed.

I reckon I'll last a week at the most. This is why I never make resolutions.
